Dear Art Night friends,

The past few months have been incredibly challenging.

We were looking forward to celebrating 5 years of Art Night on 20 June 2020 and like many other organisations in our sector, had to cancel the festival due to the global pandemic. We lost 90% of our yearly budget, with funding cancelled outright or deferred to 2021.

Receiving emergency funding from Arts Council England threw us a lifeline and enabled us to present our first digital programme on 20 June 2020, called Trailers, which will stay available online all Summer.

At Art Night, we commission artists to present new work in unusual locations and the public realm. Engaging audiences of 80,000, and offering paid work to 300 people each year — artists, performers, producers, technicians, invigilators and many more. We’re a small charity, but our activities have a big impact on our sector, audiences, freelancers and the ecosystem we work within.

Due to limited funds and the uncertainty of our survival, we’re currently operating at a very reduced capacity — so you may hear a bit less from us on social media over the summer. We’re still working behind the scenes; reflecting, learning and discussing urgent matters of structural racism in the art and culture sector, and how we have and will commit to doing better. We hope to tell you more about this in the Autumn, as well as announce the date for Art Night 2021. We’ll be working hard to find the necessary funds and adapt our work in order to come back.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the talented and hardworking Art Night 2020 team – Cathy Buckmaster, Shona Cameron, Louise Hobson, Megan McCann, Helen Nisbet, Georgia Sowerby, Kelly Tsipni Kolaza; and to each commissioned artist: Oona Doherty, Sonya Dyer, Adham Faramawy, Guerrilla Girls, Mark Leckey, Isabel Lewis, OOMK, Imran Perretta and Paul Purgas, Philomène Pirecki, Alberta Whittle.

We’re working on a couple of one-off projects which we plan to share more details about soon. Sign up to our newsletter if you’d like to hear more.

Sending love, strength and solidarity,
Philippine & Ksenia
