Náhrdelník (Necklace)

About the Work

Náhrdelník (Necklace) is a new film by artist Lucy McKenzie consisting of found footage, culled from YouTube, of the 1992 Czech television drama of the same name. Depicting the interlocking lives and dramas of characters in 19th and 20th century Prague society, McKenzie’s edit focuses on the modernist architecture and interior details of the famous Villa Mueller, where parts of the show were set.

Adding English dialogue with the use of subtitles, McKenzie works with the found material to create a new narrative from a contemporary perspective. This is a personal reading of the footage, one that ascribes domestic space, and nostalgic period television drama, with sinister undertones.

Echoing the modernist architecture and interior in the film, Náhrdelník (Necklace) will be screened inside Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Oak Room, an iconic example of Scottish modernist design until Sunday 9 July 2023. With thanks to Glasgow Life (Glasgow Museums) on behalf of Glasgow City Council.

During Art Night the film can also be viewed as a large projection in the Juniper Auditorium, where visitors can enjoy a more relaxed, informal, and accessible environment.

A co-commission with V&A Dundee.
